For parents, watching a child suffer is unbearable. So when Rabi—who lives in Andarai village in northwest Nigeria—noticed that her 10-month-old daughter, Baraka, was sick, she knew something had to be done. Baraka’s symptoms of diarrhea and fever were all pointing to malnutrition. Worst of all, her 10-month-old body was losing weight.
When treatment at a local hospital brought no improvement to her daughter’s condition, Rabi was advised to visit a therapeutic feeding center operated by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Now, Rabi visits the center once a week to collect a peanut and milk-based paste used to treat malnutrition—and young Baraka is doing much better.
Baraka is just one of the tens of thousands of children under five struggling with malnutrition throughout northwest Nigeria—and this emergency is growing worse. Without more resources, more children will go hungry.
As violence by armed groups in northwest Nigeria worsens—with intensified killings, kidnappings, looting, and sexual violence—farming and trade have been disrupted and the cost of staple foods has skyrocketed. Many families can barely afford food (let alone medicine), and so far this year, MSF has worked in partnership with Nigerian health authorities to treat over 50,000 children with malnutrition.
This chronically food-insecure region is being pushed to its limits—and families are bearing the consequences. In one area of Zamfara state, a screening of over 36,000 children conducted by MSF teams found that nearly one in four children were severely malnourished and in need of care.
“I am so happy to see my child get strong again,” says Rabi, relieved about young Baraka’s improved condition. "Whenever I see a mother with a sick child, I advise them to come to this facility, as they will take care of your child well and at no cost.”
We’re working to urgently scale up emergency aid operations throughout this region—and with your support, we can help keep the current crisis from worsening.
