This week, we kick off DSA Santa Barbara's Political Education Discussion Series!  Our very own Andrew Hawkins will be speaking about "Public Transit Basics and the Problem with Free Transit" on

Saturday, September 24, 1:00 - 2:00 pm in Alice Keck Park, by the turtle pond.

Snacks and cold drinks will be provided, courtesy of DSA Santa Barbara. Feel free to bring a cushion, blanket, or lawn chair to sit on. For planning purposes, it would be helpful to have a rough headcount, so RSVPing here would be greatly appreciated!

We hope to hold discussions monthly and learn a little bit more about one another and the movements of which we are a part.
My name is Andrew Hawkins. I'm a DSA Santa Barbara member, public transit enthusiast, and student of urban planning. Kicking off DSA SB's series of talks and discussions on topics of interest, I will be giving a talk and have a discussion about public transit, in particular: public transit fundamentals, some misconceptions about it, the challenges it faces in the context of U.S. land use, and the pitfalls of campaigning for free transit, given California's tax regime. To give a primer on the arguments for and against free transit, I've provided a few articles for people to read beforehand:
