Hi {{FirstName or 'there'}}, it's Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. According to new reporting, book bans accelerated across the U.S. during the 2021-2022 school year, primarily because “advocacy groups” called on public schools to remove more than 1,600 titles. The rapid rise came as many conservative groups targeted books dealing with race or LGBTQ issues. Earlier this year, I visited a Texas bookstore and proudly stated that I would stand up to the right-wing book banners across the country. Let me make this clear: I don’t care what makes right-wingers ‘uncomfortable.’ Here in Chicago, we believe in freedom of speech, thought, and expression. And that means we don’t ban books just because they make us uncomfortable. But here's the problem: Right-wing activists are gunning for my job -- they’re spending millions to take over Chicago and open the door to these kinds of tactics. As long as I’m your mayor, I won’t let them. So with just a few months remaining until my election, I need your help: Can you contribute $25 or more to help build my reelection campaign and continue to protect freedom of speech in Chicago? Chicago has always been at the forefront of intellectual diversity, thought, and expression. Please help me keep Chicago free, Team Lightfoot
