"This is one of those times; one of those moments in history.
You either show up or you prepare to face your conscience ."

.
Dear friends,

That was how an over-stretched immigration lawyer – who moved to Brownsville,
Texas to join volunteers responding to Donald Trump’s assault on the rights of
refugees and migrants – described to me why she was there.

Her words profoundly frame the challenge and responsibility of defending human
rights in our world today.

In a world that is overflowing with harrowing levels of conflict, division and
inequality we either show up, or face our conscience.

2019 was an incredibly challenging year for human rights, but with your support
Amnesty International showed up to steadfastly demand that human rights be
universally recognized and respected, by:

* Insisting on urgent action to protect human rights as the climate crisis mounts;
* Exposing human rights abuses and demanding safety for civilians amidst conflict and turmoil;
* Confronting inequality, hate and discrimination in Canada and elsewhere;
* Bringing solidarity and protection for human rights defenders under threat;
* Supporting protesters calling for freedom from tyranny in Hong Kong, Iraq and elsewhere;
* Demanding the release of prisoners locked up because of who they are or what they believe;
* Insisting that Canada be a leader for human rights.

Thank you for taking action this year to support human rights. Through your determination to champion human rights in our world, you are showing up.

Without the support of our members, activists and donors, Amnesty
International's work to would not be possible.

We showed up for human rights in 2019, because you showed up.

As we look ahead to 2020 I hope that you will be able to provide generous
support to our human rights work. “This is one of those times.”

In 2020 we need to show up even more strongly to defend human rights.
