Opportunities to Engage on Public Charge and Health Care Access

Dear John,

It’s been a couple of weeks since the Biden public charge regulation was finalized. This week’s newsletter re-ups our partner resources and shares new opportunities to learn and engage on public charge and expanding healthcare access for immigrant families.

PIF Materials: Thaw the Public Charge Chilling Effect

Now that DHS has finalized the Biden public charge rule, engaging immigrant communities is more important than ever. To support your outreach efforts, we’ve updated PIF’s suite of community-facing materials and materials for advocates. PIF active members also have access to a final rule partner toolkit offering a range of digital and media outreach samples. Click here to sign your organization up as an active member.

USCIS Public Charge National Stakeholder Engagement Next Week

On September 29, DHS is hosting a virtual event for public charge stakeholders to share information on key provisions of the final rule. Importantly, USCIS will be joined by federal agencies administering health and social services programs to share information. Register by tomorrow if you would like to submit a question for the panelists.

Engage media in your state

PIF’s 2021 immigrant families poll found that in-language media are trusted information sources for immigrant families. We encourage partners to offer briefings for media outlets on the new public charge regulation, and for active members, we can provide PIF spokespersons to offer a national perspective and take technical questions about the new policy. #ProtectFamilies Tweetstorm reaches 2M+

Many thanks to partners who participated in the recent #ProtectFamilies tweetstorm focused on the new Biden public charge regulation. You engaged more than 150 Twitter accounts with a total of more than 400 tweets, reaching more than 2.4 million Twitter accounts during the hour. That included Senator Mazie Hirono and Rep. Yvette Clarke (RT them both!), among other policymaker accounts.

Advocacy opportunity: Speak Out to Improve Health Care Access

The Biden-Harris administration released a new proposed rule to implement Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. Section 1557 protects individuals from discrimination in healthcare on the basis of race, color, national origin (including language), age, disability, sex (including reproductive health, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex stereotypes, and sex characteristics). Comments are due by October 3.

If you are interested in commenting, PIF is lifting up efforts by our partners at the National Health Law Program (NHeLP). NHeLP and its partners have developed a number of resources. NHeLP has seven template comments for organizations to use, including one focusing on language access. They also have comment portals geared towards individuals who want to share their stories and experience, as well as social media toolkits available. All of the resources are available here. Please feel free to share with your networks. If you have questions, please contact Mara Youdelman, [email protected].
