Email hero image, blue box with text: fall member drive, support nonprofit, independent journalism <[link removed]>

Hi Reader,

Our fall member drive began this week, and I’m so grateful for the response we’ve seen so far from our readers. I hope you’ll join them by making a donation in any amount to support our deep-dive journalism, which shines a light on corruption and injustice, and which seeks to hold the powerful to account. <[link removed]>

We shine that light with purpose. Our mission is to use the moral force of investigative journalism to spur impact. Our work has led to laws being passed, people resigning from powerful positions, victims receiving compensation and much more. We carefully track the impact of our work, and here are a few recent examples:

*

A Right-Wing Think Tank Claimed to Be a Church. Now, Members of Congress Want to Investigate. <[link removed]> Forty lawmakers are calling on the IRS and the Treasury to investigate after ProPublica reported <[link removed]> that the Family Research Council gained protections by claiming it is a church.

*

Court Strikes Down State Law That Gave Millions in Tax Breaks to Casinos <[link removed]> A Superior Court judge in New Jersey has thrown out a state law granting Atlantic City’s casinos tens of millions of dollars in tax breaks, saying that the measure was passed on dubious grounds and violated the state Constitution. ProPublica and the Atlantic City Press initially reported <[link removed]> on this law in June.

*

State Investigation Reveals Racial Disparities in Student Discipline and Police Involvement <[link removed]> The Illinois civil rights probe of the state’s largest high school district comes after ProPublica and the Chicago Tribune documented <[link removed]> thousands of police tickets issued to students for minor infractions.

We’ve got reporters all over the country investigating stories of injustice and corruption — stories that can make a real difference for everyday people. It’s the only kind of work we do, and we’re able to sustain it because of the generosity and confidence of our readers.

Join over 40,000 ProPublicans and donate today. Help ensure that ProPublica has the resources to follow the most important stories wherever they lead and for however long it takes. <[link removed]>
