Democrats Rush to Spin Biden’s Statement That the “Pandemic is Over”
Katie Pavlich: Democrats desperate to hold onto their emergency COVID-19 powers are hitting the airwaves to walk back comments made by President Joe Biden over the weekend that the “pandemic is over” ( Townhall). Tom Elliot: “Surgeon General” @vivek_murthy contradicts Biden, says the pandemic is not over: “We’re losing about 400 people a day on average to this virus. We need to get that number lower. We have people who are struggling with long Covid” ( Twitter). Fox News: In a Fox News interview Monday, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., offered a take. “I think what the president was trying to say is that the worst of the pandemic is over,” Khanna said, pointing to those who suffer symptoms of what is referred to as “long COVID,” as well as “people who are vulnerable who have issues” ( Fox News).

Poll: Abbott Leads Beto O’Rourke by 11 Points as Americans Call Border Crisis an “Invasion”
Guy Benson: Americans disapprove of the border mess, with most calling it an “invasion.” They trust Republicans to handle the issue better, but much of the most high-profile strain and difficulty has been borne by border states and communities, even as serious elements of the problem impact the entire country. Governors Abbott, Ducey and now DeSantis are forcing Democrats to taste a small fraction of what their failing policies have been wreaking in their states for the better part of two years, successfully baiting these blue state officials and their journalist allies into volcanic responses. This has elevated the overall controversy, raising its profile and prominence during the final stretch of the election. And in Texas, at least, voters appear to be rewarding Abbott for forcing the issue ( Townhall). Interactive Polls: Greg Abbott holds 11-Point lead over Beto O’Rourke among likely voters in Texas Governor Race. TX Governor: (R) Greg Abbott 50% (+11). (D) Beto O’Rourke 39% ( Twitter).

Stocks Drop as Fed Committee Meets to Discuss Interest Rate Hike
CNBC: Stocks tumbled on Tuesday as the sell-off on Wall Street mounted and investors braced for another large rate hike due out Wednesday from the Federal Reserve. The Federal Open Markets Committee began its two-day policy meeting on Tuesday, where central bankers are expected to announce a 0.75 percentage point rate hike on Wednesday. Stocks have slumped in recent weeks as comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell and an unexpectedly hot August consumer price index report caused traders to prepare for even higher rates until inflation cools ( CNCB). USA Today: Ford fell 12.3% for the biggest decline in the S&P 500 after slashing its third-quarter earnings forecast because a parts shortage will leave it with as many as 45,000 vehicles unfinished on its lots when the quarter ends Sept. 30. Last week, FedEx and General Electric warned investors about damage to their operations from inflation ( USA Today).

Minnesota Fraudsters Who Stole $250 Million in Pandemic Aid Charged
Star Tribune: The director of the Feeding Our Future nonprofit and 46 other people have been charged in what federal prosecutors say was a “massive scheme” to defraud the government of more than $250 million meant to feed needy children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Six indictments were unsealed Tuesday that describe alleged crimes including wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering and bribery. Three others connected to the scheme, charged via felony information, are expected to plead guilty ( Star Tribune). New York Times: But their scheme still pulled in millions of dollars per week, prosecutors said because government officials had relaxed oversight of the feeding program during the pandemic and because the accused fraudsters had help from a trusted insider. That insider was Aimee Bock, the founder of a nonprofit group, Feeding Our Future, that the State of Minnesota relied on as a watchdog to stop fraud at feeding sites. But Ms. Bock did the opposite, the indictments said: When pandemic-relief programs flooded the programs with money, she exploited her position to bring in nearly 200 new feeding operations she knew were submitting fake or inflated invoices. Even when the government of Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, raised questions, Ms. Bock rebuffed them by filing a lawsuit and accusing state officials of discriminating against her group’s largely East African clientele ( New York Post).

Gap to Cut 500 Corporate Jobs Amid Declining Sales
Wall Street Journal: Gap Inc. is eliminating about 500 corporate jobs, according to people familiar with the matter, moving to reduce expenses at the apparel retailer amid declining sales and profits. The jobs are mainly at Gap’s main offices in San Francisco and New York, as well as in Asia, the people said. The company is laying off staff and eliminating positions that are currently open across a range of departments. Some employees have been notified of the layoffs in recent days, the people said. The company has endured years of slumping sales at the flagship Gap brand and, more recently, problems at the Old Navy chain, which accounts for more than half of total revenue. Sales at Old Navy took a hit this year after an attempt to make inclusive clothing sizes backfired, leaving it with surplus goods. The company is searching for a permanent CEO after the resignation of Sonia Syngal in July ( Wall Street Journal).

Russian Stocks Crater as Putin Expected to Escalate War, Annex Ukraine Territory
Insider: Russian stocks fell Tuesday on signs that President Vladimir Putin could escalate his war on Ukraine after his military suffered a stunning rout earlier this month. Meanwhile, Moscow moved to hold sham referendums to fully annex occupied territory in eastern and southern Ukraine. While annexation wouldn’t be recognized as legal, it raises the prospect that any attacks on Russian forces there could be claimed as attacks on Russian soil, potentially escalating the war. New legislation in Russia’s parliament would heighten punishment for military crimes, such as desertion, damage to military property, and insubordination, raising fears it could lead to a full mobilization later ( Insider). Bloomberg: About 30% of the slump is due to possible tax hikes on exporters and 70% due to concerns over referendums and potential mobilization in Russia, according to Iskander Lutsko, chief strategist at ITI Capital ( Bloomberg).

State Department to Promote Only Woke Diplomats in Accordance with Biden Executive Order
National Review: Members of America’s diplomatic corps will now be expected to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles, the State Department recently announced. An internal document obtained exclusively by National Review provides further detail on how State Department officials must now promote and advance DEI principles to receive tenure and promotions. While that document details uncontroversial promotion criteria, such as ensuring respectful behavior in the workplace, the specific focus on DEI echoes the language of left-leaning activists. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced last week that the department had finalized its “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Strategic Plan,” which was mandated by a Biden executive order ( National Review).Tom Fitton: U.S. Diplomats Required to ‘Advance’ anti-American Marxist Critical Race Theory to Receive Promotions ( Twitter).
