Dear friend,

Five years ago today, Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico, destroying homes, leaving millions without power, and costing countless lives. It was a devastating tragedy, and a stark reminder of the human and structural costs of the climate crisis.

And now, five years later, Puerto Rico is once again without power after Hurricane Fiona. Today, I'm holding everyone impacted by both storms in my prayers, and I'm dedicating myself to fight for climate justice in their honor.

I'll continue to work with the Biden administration and community leaders to ensure that Puerto Ricans get the support they deserve. I'll continue to advocate for utility justice and climate resiliency -- especially for those most vulnerable. And I'll continue to champion the fight for Puerto Rico's decolonization, as I have my entire career.

This is a stark reminder of the cost of Washington's inaction -- and we can't be too late again.

In solidarity,
Nydia
