The Situation in Puerto Rico

As Puerto Ricans see unprecedented weather conditions, the President and Democrats are ready to take action:

* @POTUS: “Today, I spoke with @GovPierluisi to address the immediate needs of Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Fiona. ([link removed]) We discussed federal personnel working to assist the island's recovery, and I assured the Governor that we'll increase support substantially in the coming days.” ([link removed])


* @TheDemocrats: “This week, President @JoeBiden declared an Emergency Disaster Declaration to ensure the full force of federal government support for Puerto Rico in its response efforts to Tropical Storm Fiona. ([link removed]) We are here in support of all those affected. Together, we’ll get through this.” ([link removed])


* @HarrisonJaime: “Puerto Rico has been through some very tough storms recently… ready to do what we can to help them get through this one.” ([link removed])

HBCU Week
The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Initiative) will convene its annual national conference Sept. 20-23 in Washington, D.C. This year’s conference is both a tribute to the monumental contributions of HBCUs to this country, as well as an acknowledgement of the critical role these important institutions play in advancing the nation’s global competitiveness. The conference will coincide with the celebration of National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week.

The Biden-Harris Administration continues to take a whole-of-government approach to support the well-being of students, families, staff and faculty at HBCU campuses. To date, the Administration has delivered nearly $6 billion in cumulative investments to HBCUs, including:
* $3.7 billion through the American Rescue Plan and other COVID relief;
* $1.6 billion in capital finance debt relief; and
* $500 million in grant funding to help HBCUs and other MSIs expand capacity.
