John, I have always believed that national service is one of the best ways for our nation and our communities to create progress, and AmeriCorps, one of the organizations leading the charge, will be celebrating 29 years of service tomorrow! For almost three decades, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors have helped meet crucial needs in communities across the country. Over the years, I've had several opportunities to work with this organization and witness just how much of an impact national service can have on our country. I launched one of AmeriCorps' first programs, leading 150 members in 15 cities who tutored students, so I know firsthand the tremendous benefits this program has on people of all walks of life, whether they’re members of AmeriCorps or individuals in the communities where members work. At the National "I Have a Dream" Foundation, I worked with AmeriCorps members to provide after school programs in tough neighborhoods where too few students were able to reach their full potential. This experience changed my life, and I began to see how our sense of common purpose and values bind us together as Americans. I believe that the call to serve is ongoing and that all of us can make a positive change in the lives of our fellow Americans. That's why in the Senate, I continue to advocate for the expansion of national service programs like AmeriCorps. Will you join me today in congratulating AmeriCorps for their 29 years of service?
