Dear John,

What would be the greatest gift you could give a loved one this holiday season? How about a second chance? When it comes to those we care for most, we want to see them succeed. But once a person enters the criminal justice system, getting life back on track can be a struggle.

That’s why the Law Enforcement Action Partnership is so deeply invested in reforms that can make the process of re-entering society easier to navigate. If we give people who’ve been through the system the right tools and support systems, we can reduce recidivism and make our communities safer and more successful for all of us. Because everyone is someone’s loved one.

Throughout the month of December, we're proud to share 12 Ways of Criminal Justice Reform -- real examples of our speakers making a difference in the world.

Your partnership made these changes happen. Donate now to stand with LEAP as we fight for justice reform in 2020 and beyond.

The Fifth Way of Reform: LEAP Believes in Second Chances

LEAP speaker Officer Sheri Ray (Fmr.) testified in opposition to SB 36, a bill that would create an online felony registry in Indiana. The state already had public, searchable databases in place, making the online registry a waste of resources and a significant roadblock for job seekers who may have a felony conviction on their record. Officer Ray pointed out that felony registries are not proven to keep communities safer or to contribute to the rehabilitation of those with convictions.

Making it more difficult for formerly incarcerated people to get work makes it that much more difficult for them to get their lives back on track. Some may be forced to return to crime as the only option to support themselves.  SB 36 did not move forward, due in large part to Officer Ray’s powerful testimony.
