This was simply the right thing to do.

This has been a very busy year for us, folks.

With your help and support, we were able to make real, progressive change in the lives of many Californians -- and set a positive standard for our country. That includes suspending the death penalty.

The death penalty is discriminatory. It is ineffective, irreversible, and immoral. This year I decided that it was time for California to finally put an end to this failed system.

On March 12, 2019, I signed an Executive Order that declared a moratorium on executions of California’s 737 inmates on death row. I also ordered a withdrawal of California’s lethal injection protocol and called for the immediate closure of the execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison.

This was simply the right thing to do to end this backwards practice. And although we made an enormous change to our prison culture and policies here in California, our work is not done.

We need to continue to fight for this decision to be made across the entire country because lives are at stake, including innocent ones. The progress we make in California sets a standard for the rest of the nation -- which is why I need your help.

Your contributions give us the resources we need to make progressive changes like this possible. So today I am asking you to donate $10 or more to our End of Year fundraising drive to help us continue the fight in 2020 and beyond.

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

The more progress we’re able to make in California, the better our entire country will be.

Thanks for stepping up,

— Gavin
