Dear Friend of OpenSecrets,

As primary season wraps and attentions turn to November, thank you for following OpenSecrets investigative reporting. Your readership and support has helped us keep up with the breakneck pace of election spending these past summer months.

And, to no surprise, political fundraising operations have been extremely busy this cycle.

So far, our researchers have identified over $2.4 billion in contributions to federal candidates, as well as another $2.9 billion to state candidates and sitting officeholders, parties, and ballot committees.

This staggering election price tag and the avenues of funding that swell candidates’ campaign coffers often go unreported, or get used in vicious attack ads against one side or the other. At OpenSecrets you receive unbiased reporting that looks at the flow of money behind issues in the news.

As we start our fall donation drive today, I’m asking you to join us for the first time as a new supporter of OpenSecrets by making a donation of any amount.

Readers like you who use our tools and share our reporting make it possible for us to pursue significant money-in-politics stories that people need to hear about. As a nonprofit newsroom and research group, we are grateful to our donors whose generosity lets us remain independent and keeps our services free.

Just these past weeks, we’ve reported on major money in politics stories including a high-profile governor breaking fundraising records, a record-setting primary in Arizona, and tight races in Nevada and Georgia that could determine control of the U.S. Senate.

Millions more will be raised and spent in the final weeks of the election in efforts to influence the outcomes of key races. Without reporting on the impact of those political dollars, voters will be left with an incomplete picture when they head to the polls.

Will you support our investigative reporting and research needed to make billions of dollars in political contributions and spending more transparent to the American electorate?

P.S. Every year we welcome more and more supporters to our community, which makes our fundraising more democratic and less reliant on research grants and institutions. You can view our financials and current funders, and consider joining as a first time donor today during our fall drive.
