News from Representative Allred

Dear John,

I know folks are struggling with rising costs lately and one of the areas I hear about most from North Texans is the high cost of prescription drugs and health care. Since my first day in Congress, I’ve been working to expand access to quality, affordable health care and to lower costs across the board.

That’s why I was proud to vote for the Inflation Reduction Act last month, which President Biden signed into law. This legislation takes aim at prescription drug prices and slashes costs for folks on Medicare. Some provisions in this legislation include a $2,000 annual out of pocket maximum, $35 monthly cap on insulin, and will result in 80 medications with negotiated prices by the end of the decade.

To put it simply: it's a big deal. And I asked Texans how this legislation would impact them. Check out some of their stories below:

From what I have read, it sounds like it could help me tremendously. I have been paying $350 to over $500 for insulin. I also have other high price prescriptions, some over $300.” - Jim from Garland

I [take] Imbruvica, a special prescription for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. It currently costs over $16,000 for a 28 day supply. My copay after meeting my out of pocket costs is over $ 800.00 for each refill.” - Dennis from Richardson

Insulin is a required part of my life. Having the price capped at $35 will be wonderful.”- Vicki from Richardson

My husband’s medications cost us about $350 to $400+ a month.  It could save us a lot of money.  He is diabetic and if he starts needing insulin it would save us even more.” - Sally from Richardson

The health and well-being of North Texans is my number one priority and I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass legislation that provides real relief for hardworking folks.

It’s an honor to serve North Texas, where I was born and raised.
