The U.S. Forest Service wants to turn the home of threatened grizzly bears into a livestock field.

Areas just north of Yellowstone National Park will be turned over to industry to graze cattle. That'll be devastating for the native habitat and put grizzly bears at risk.

So we've gone to court to stop it.

The Forest Service has now expanded both the livestock grazing area and the grazing season on the east side of Montana's Paradise Valley.

Putting livestock in grizzly bear habitat is asking for trouble — and grizzlies will pay for it with their lives. Already this month the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved the killing of a Montana grizzly bear for preying on cows.

The Forest Service plan will also slow the bears' recovery and contribute to keeping the Yellowstone grizzly population isolated.

And, since the Fish and Wildlife Service used out-of-date science to justify the dangerous plan — and failed to take into account how grazing endangers threatened bears — we're being forced to sue it, too.

Just last year the Service admitted that livestock conflicts and lack of habitat connectivity are harming grizzly recovery — and that makes these plans even more infuriating. The mission of the agency is to protect our native wildlife, not hand over their habitat to private interests.

We're also in court challenging the Service for turning over parts of Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest to grazing.

In that case, the agency never even considered how many female bears could be killed, even though female grizzlies with cubs have been documented occupying the areas where bears will be targeted.

Our government has a duty to protect rare and vulnerable species. Instead, again and again these federal agencies are selling out wildlife for the sake of industry profits.

We won't let up in our fight for Yellowstone's grizzlies. The bears are counting on us.
