President Biden: “The Pandemic is Over”

CBS: In an interview on “60 Minutes” Sunday night, President Biden said the COVID-19 pandemic is “over” in the United States. Mr. Biden’s comments came only a few weeks after his administration asked Congress for billions of dollars to maintain its testing and vaccination efforts. The remark contradicts statements made by his own aides earlier this month, as they have urged Americans to seek out an updated booster ahead of a feared fall and winter wave of the virus (CBS). Disclose.tv: Biden: “The pandemic is over” (Twitter). Rep. Thomas Massie: If “the pandemic is over” as Biden says, then all of the President’s emergency powers predicated on a pandemic, all COVID vax mandates, the emergency powers of every governor, Emergency Use Authorizations, and the PREP act should all be voided tomorrow (Twitter). Mike Pompeo: Biden now says “the pandemic is over” as he’s kicking tens of thousands of healthy soldiers out of the military with his COVID vaccine mandate. These soldiers should be reinstated immediately (Twitter).

Biden Stated US Forces Would Defend Taiwan from Chinese Invasion; White House Immediately Walks Statement Back

Bloomberg: President Joe Biden said US military forces would defend Taiwan from “an unprecedented attack,” his latest pledge of support as his administration seeks to deter China from increasing military pressure on the democratically elected government in Taipei. A US official said Sunday that US policy hasn’t changed, noting that Biden had made the same points before. The official asked not to be identified responding to the “60 Minutes” interview. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning urged the US to “fully understand the extremely important and highly sensitive nature of the Taiwan question and abide by the one China principle,” at a Monday news briefing in Beijing. Failing to do so, she added, could cause “further damage to China-US relations and peace and stability across the Strait” (Bloomberg). 60 Minutes: President Biden tells 60 Minutes that U.S. men and women would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. However, after our interview, a White House official told us that U.S. policy on Taiwan has not changed (Twitter).

Biden’s Issues Most Executive Orders in First Year Since 1970 Costing Taxpayers Up to $1.5 Trillion

Fox News: President Biden has issued nearly 100 executive orders, which will cost taxpayers up to $1.5 trillion, as the national debt nears $31 trillion. Biden currently sits at 99 executive orders since taking office. His torrent pace came primarily within his first year, when he issued more than any president since the 1970s. “President Biden’s executive actions have cost taxpayers more than $1 trillion so far,” the Heritage Foundation’s Matthew Dickerson told Fox News Digital. “That’s taking into account the recent student loan executive action, which could cost up to $1 trillion” (Fox News). Canary CEO Dan Eberhart: Yet Biden and his administration still wonder why inflation has skyrocketed under their watch (Twitter).

Yeshiva University Ceases All Campus Clubs After Supreme Court Forces Recognition of LGBTQ Group

NBC News: Yeshiva University has abruptly suspended student club activity in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier this week that ordered the school to recognize – for now – an LGBTQ student group (NBC News). Fox News: The dispute stems from a New York state court ordering Yeshiva to grant full recognition to a LGBTQ+ club on campus. Yeshiva has argued it is a religious institution and cannot be forced to recognize something at odds with the university’s religious mission (Fox News). Becket: Yeshiva University is America’s oldest Jewish institution of higher education. “Yeshiva” literally means a school for studying the Talmud – and Talmud studies remain at the heart of everything Yeshiva does (Becket). Albert Mohler: This is not like a trespassing issue. This is not like a boundary dispute on real estate. This is a matter of moral conviction on one of the most basic moral issues faced by humanity through millennia. I think it’s a very ominous sign (The Briefing).

GOP Senators Push DOJ for Special Counsel to Look Into Hunter Biden

CNBC: More than 30 Senate Republicans asked Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday to give the federal prosecutor who has been investigating Hunter Biden for several years “special counsel protections and authorities.” The group, which includes Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, wrote in a letter to Garland that the move is warranted because the criminal investigation involves President Joe Biden’s son. They also contended it would “avoid the appearance of impropriety.” Giving U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss special counsel authority would also “provide additional assurances to the American people that the Hunter Biden investigation is free from political influence,” the letter argued (CNBC). Katie Pavlich: After Grassley revealed whistleblower allegations three weeks ago, a top FBI agent resigned. He was accused of burying the Hunter Biden laptop investigation for political reasons (Townhall).

NYC Man Who Destroyed McDonald’s with an Axe, Released Without Bail

New York Post: An accused jilted madman who flew into an ax-wielding rage at a Lower East Side McDonald’s was released without bail at his arraignment, authorities said Sunday. Michael Palacios, 31, who allegedly grabbed an ax and trashed the Delancey Street fast-food joint early Friday, was arraigned on fourth-degree criminal mischief and possession-of-weapons charges hours later and freed, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said. Neither charge is eligible for bail under the state’s lenient criminal justice reforms (New York Post). National Review: Palacios claimed he only started flailing his weapon because he was assaulted. Three bystanders appeared to confront and beat him because he allegedly harassed a woman, who repeatedly rejected his advances, according to video of the incident (National Review). Ian Miles Cheong: Interview with the McDonald’s axe rampage guy in NYC (Twitter).

Kentucky School Shooter Has Chance for Parole After 25 Years

NBC: A Kentucky man who killed three students and injured five more in a school shooting a quarter century ago has a chance at parole this week. Michael Carneal was a 14-year-old freshman in 1997 when he fired a stolen pistol at a before-school prayer group in the lobby of Heath High School, near Paducah, Kentucky. He received a life sentence with the opportunity for parole after 25 years, the maximum allowed at the time for someone his age (NBC). Fox News: Carneal’s parole hearing is scheduled to start on Monday with testimony from those injured in the shooting and close relatives of those who were killed. On Tuesday, Carneal will make his case for release from the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange. If the board rules against him, they can decide how long Carneal should wait before his next opportunity to seek parole (Fox News).

London Streets Flooded with People to Say Goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II

CNN: Britain bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth II on Monday with a majestic funeral steeped in tradition and a send-off reflective of the broad popularity she managed to retain over her remarkable seven-decade reign. The funeral, which served as both a state and religious service and marked the culmination of 10 days of mourning, honored the Queen with the sort of pageantry that she used to promote the royal family and “brand Britain” throughout her life. Tens of thousands of people flocked to streets around Westminster Abbey and along the 25-mile procession route from central London to Windsor, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sovereign’s flag-draped coffin as it traveled by hearse to her final resting place (CNN). Associated Press: The queen will be laid to rest later with her husband, Prince Philip, at a private family service (Associated Press).

Hurricane Fiona Continues to Flood Puerto Rico

Associated Press: Hurricane Fiona unleashed more rain on Puerto Rico on Monday, a day after the storm knocked out power and water to most of the island, and National Guard troops rescued hundreds of people who got stranded. The governor warned that it could take days to get the lights back on. The blow from Fiona was made more devastating because Puerto Rico has yet to recover from Hurricane Maria, which killed nearly 3,000 people and destroyed the power grid in 2017. Five years later, more than 3,000 homes on the island are still covered by blue tarps. The storm stripped pavement from roads, tore off roofs and sent torrents pouring into homes. It also took out a bridge and flooded two airports. Authorities reported two deaths from the hurricane (Associated Press). David Begnaud: Our @CBSEveningNews report from Puerto Rico (Twitter).
