Jayla was born with Down syndrome as well as a condition that caused bone and tissue to block her nostrils. She underwent surgery at 2 months old and had to be intubated for nearly four months. Once her breathing tube was removed, she didn't have the instinct to nurse or feed from a bottle because she had missed that developmental milestone.

Jayla needed to learn a new skill--and that's where Children's Hospital's remarkable, child-centered innovations came in. Her care team used a device called a musical pacifier, a new tool that uses music to help teach premature infants essential skills.

When Jayla sucked on the pacifier, she was rewarded with music. To add to the pacifier's playlist, CHLA Music Therapy resident Heng Wei Moh and Jayla's mother, Lynette, wrote personalized lyrics to the sweet tune of "You Are My Sunshine" and recorded it for Jayla.
