Hi John,
I hadn’t planned on emailing you tonight. But a few of my supporters forwarded me screenshots of a poll they received from the “Working Families Party”, a fringe political organization with which my opponent Mary Moriarty has aligned herself. The poll insinuates that I am an angry racist for being too hard on violent criminals during my tenure as a judge and prosecutor. See for yourself below.
Hennepin County voters are too smart to fall for this bullshit: I am a Black woman who has spent my life fighting for equality. I served as the chair of the Council on Black Minnesotans and started the Diversity Issues Committee at the Minnesota State Bar Association. And I was tough on violent criminals because their harm disproportionately affected minority and low-income communities.
Mary Moriarty knows she ran the office of Hennepin County Public Defender under a culture of fear, so she is weaponizing out-of-state money to slander me first. We need to respond now. [[link removed]]

Here's the truth: I presided over thousands of cases as a judge and less than five were overturned by corrective courts. The case that Mary's camp is referring to as "discriminatory" was overturned because I told a defendant that I was giving him a second chance – and if he messed up again, he was going to face consequences.
Guess what? He messed up again, and he faced reasonable consequences.
I am not perfect. It has not been a cakewalk to go from being a single mother on welfare to a nurse to a lawyer to a prosecutor to a judge to a candidate. But: I will continue to run this campaign with honesty, straightforwardness, and dignity – just as I have my entire adult life.
Millionaires who have never stepped foot in Hennepin County will continue to try to buy this race for my opponent. I was able to make it through to the general election with zero support from outside groups because our communities know that we need the next Hennepin County Attorney to prioritize public safety over public opinion.
