John -
Right now, while the entire island of Puerto Rico is without power from another climate-fueled hurricane, the Biden administration is drafting a new five-year plan that would allow new offshore oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Alaska.
This is a massive step backwards by the Biden administration and betrayal of all of the communities facing climate impacts. Expanding drilling over millions of acres of land would open the door to disastrous oil spills and further delay the transition to renewable energy.
While this proposal would be a disaster for coastal communities in Alaska, the Gulf, and the climate, we have the chance to stop it before it’s implemented. The Department of Interior is accepting public comments on the Administration’s proposal between now and October 9 — allowing us to come out in full force against this plan, but only if we act quickly.
Let’s be clear, John: In order to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change, we cannot accept any new federal fossil fuel leasing and offshore drilling.
If President Biden is committed to taking action on climate change, he can’t move forward with this proposed five-year plan. Instead, his administration must invest in sustainable energies that prioritize energy independence and environmental justice.
Thank you for taking action.
