Last July, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill which completely halted all youth shooting activities including hunting camps, Boy Scout, high school and private shooting teams and firearm safety programs.  The bill in question, AB 2571 banned all marketing regarding firearms and related products to anyone under 18 years of age.  Youth shooting sports were effectively gutted.

GOC and CRPA immediately filed a lawsuit (read it HERE) to stop the bill from going into effect – not just part of the bill, but the entire thing.  Without warning, however, our legal remedy was upended by a last minute “fix” before the Legislature adjourned.  Although the supposed “fix” allows youth shooting sports to continue, it’s vague and unclear, and sure to create confusion as to what is legal and what is not.  In fact, it could expose participants of youth shooting events to some serious financial harm.  GOC explains in detail what happened in “Political “Friends” – Not All That Common”. 

GOC and CRPA have received a lot of phone calls about taking kids hunting and shooting – both of which are still legal.  However, what can be “promoted” - in either an organized or private situation – is the question.  CRPA has prepared a comprehensive document on what exactly is legal – and what is not.  GOC strongly encourages anyone that is involved with any sort of youth shooting activities to read it, because it turns out that the simple “fix” isn’t so simple at all.  It’s very important to be armed and informed.
