As I prepare to transition out of my role as Campaigns Director next month, I am reflecting on what we have achieved together as an organization, as coalitions, and as a growing movement for abolition. I have had the privilege of working with Critical Resistance (CR) for four years that – despite facing increasing assaults of the prison industrial complex (PIC) – have achieved material wins against policing and jailing, and shown the incredible resilience, creativity, unity, and possibility of abolitionist organizing.
I joined CR to be a part of an organization that was working to achieve a bold long-term vision through uncompromised and strategic action. This is no easy charge but it is a necessary one, whether on the small scale of individual education or in making larger campaign demands to close jails or stop policing programs. In this work and through CR’s clear analysis, I have learned a great deal from members, staff, advisory board, partner organizations, and our broader community.
