During last Thursday night’s episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert used a word to describe Jesus Christ that should have had CBS executives running for cover. At the same time, they should have been frantically penning a lengthy apology to Christians worldwide while drafting a termination notice for its Late Show host.
Stephen Colbert had just called Jesus Christ a “cuck.”
Angered at Gov. Ron DeSantis sending two planeloads of illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Colbert told his audience, “Just like that cuck Jesus, send that guy a truckload of lepers, see how he likes it.”
Colbert’s blasphemous depiction of Jesus as a “cuck” came and went with little fanfare, perhaps because most Americans are unfamiliar with the vulgar description of someone being branded a “cuck.”
Let’s turn to the New York Times for help.
“The world ‘cuck’ is short for ‘cuckold,’” explains [ [link removed] ] NY Times film critic Glenn Kenny.
But what is a cuckold?
Healthline [ [link removed] ] says a cuckold “is a fetish or kink in which a person gets turned on by their partner having sex with someone else…The modern-day cuckold — who’s not necessarily a cisgender or heterosexual male — is fully aware and heartily approves of their partner’s affairs.”
Describing Jesus as someone who “gets turned on” watching his partner having sex with another person should outrage anyone who believes Christ is the Son of God and not some masturbating figure hiding in a corner watching his wife having sex.
But will CBS even hear a peep from Christians after learning the network just reduced their Lord and Savior to a PornHub fetish?
Will there be demands for an apology? Or that Colbert is fired? Will there be organized protests or boycotts against advertisers of The Late Show?
Or will Christians again misinterpret Matthew 5:39 and turn the other cheek and remain silent?
I’m afraid Christians are becoming so accustomed to turning the other cheek when insulted that their necks are beginning to look like rubbery turnstiles.
Hit me again. Hit me again. I don’t care.
Sadomasochism is not the intent of Matthew 5:39. Instead, it’s an admonishment for Christians to stand their ground and demonstrate that TRUTH will not take second place to falsehood.
Even if our faces are slapped silly, we will speak and defend God’s truth. (Eph. 4:25)
And the truth at the moment is…Jesus is NOT a “cuck.”
Virtually every entertainment network has repeatedly shown a willingness and enthusiasm to fire or suspend employees or actors who use profane insults against their liberal friends.
Surely, it can’t be that distant of a memory to recall that Roseanne Barr [ [link removed] ] was fired shortly after the reboot of Roseanne for referring to Obama adviser Valerie Jarret as the “offspring of the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes.”
Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson [ [link removed] ] was temporarily suspended from that A&E show after telling GQ magazine that condoning homosexual behavior could lead to condoning bestiality.
In 2013, Alec Baldwin [ [link removed] ] was fired from MSNBC’s Up Late With Alec Baldwin for using a homosexual slur against a photographer.
Is calling Jesus Christ a “cuck” somehow less offensive than the examples that got Roseanne Barr, Alec Baldwin, and Phil Robertson fired or suspended?
Imagine if Stephen Colbert dared to call the Prophet Muhammed a “cuck.”
Simply drawing a cartoon image of the Prophet Muhammed can get you beheaded, much less referring to him as someone who gets off watching his many wives having sex with other men.
Smartly, for his own sake (and for the sake of CBS studios), Colbert wasn’t blaspheming Muhammed. Instead, he was blaspheming Jesus Christ, whose followers are less likely to give two hoots about defending His honor, reputation, purity, or immaculateness – or so they think.
I’m old enough to remember when Hollywood legend and movie director Martin Scorsese came out with The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, where Jesus was depicted as having sex with Mary Magdalene.
Back then, Christian outrage was both felt and seen.
A reported 25,000 protesters gathered to picket [ [link removed] ] the headquarters of Universal Pictures in protest of the film. There were so many death threats against Scorsese that he had to flank himself with bodyguards [ [link removed] ] for several years.
The Saint Michel cinema in Paris was set on fire [ [link removed] ] while showing the film.
A Catholic nun, Mother Angelica [ [link removed] ], called the movie “the most blasphemous ridicule of the Eucharist that’s ever been perpetrated in this world” with “the power to destroy souls eternally.”
And this was about a film depicting Christ having sex with Mary Magdalene. And as offensive and blasphemous as this was to Christian believers around the world, it’s considerably less offensive than saying Christ is a “cuck” who gets off watching Mary Magdalene having sex with other men.
Nearly a quarter of a century has passed since the release of The Last Temptation of Christ and the international uproar it created.
Will that outrage be repeated over Colbert referring to Jesus Christ as a “cuck.”
Scorsese reduced Christ to a mortal man, no different from any other sinner.
“I’m a liar, a hypocrite; I’m afraid of everything. I don’t ever tell the truth,” Scorsese’s Jesus would tell his followers.
Not to be outdone, Steven Colbert reduced Christ to being nothing more than a porn fetish, a “cuck,” someone you would probably never invite into your home, much less into your heart.
Both depictions of Christ have the power to “destroys souls eternally.”
