Dear Georgian,

Happy 75th Birthday to the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard! I am proud to represent Moody and Robins Air Force Bases, Headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Reserve and the Georgia Air National Guard in Congress. Thank you to all airmen in our district for your service.

Friday was National POW/MIA Recognition Day. My grandfather, Lt. Jack Austin Scott, was a POW in WWII for 18 months before being liberated. As his grandson, I paused to honor the service and sacrifice of missing and captive service members and their families.

Georgia's Eighth District has highly talented students who are leading the way in STEM programs, and I'm excited to announce the start of the 2022 Congressional App Challenge. This annual, nationwide competition engages students' creativity and encourages their participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The Congressional App Challenge allows students to compete with peers throughout their congressional district by creating and exhibiting an original software application, or "app," for web, PC, tablet, mobile, or other platforms of their choice.

The Congressional App Challenge is open to all middle and high school students in Georgia's Eighth District. Students or classrooms can form teams, and those entering the competition must submit their app by November 1, 2022. More information can be found here.

September is Passport Awareness Month! Because the number of people traveling in the fall and winter is lower than in the spring and summer months, this time of year is the prime opportunity to make sure your passport is updated. Taking care of your passport now will prepare you for any unexpected or exciting trips you may have planned later. For more information on acquiring or renewing a passport, visit the link here.

As 2023 approaches, the House Agriculture Committee is working toward the next Farm Bill. This legislation shapes every aspect of ag policy and it’s critical that voices in the Eighth District are heard. We need to know what’s working and what can be improved. If you are a farmer, take a moment to provide feedback here.

As always, my staff and I are here to help. If you need assistance with a federal agency or have comments or concerns to share with me, please do not hesitate to call my Warner Robins, Tifton, or Washington, D.C. offices. To receive frequent updates, I encourage you to visit my website, like my Facebook page, follow me on YouTube, and follow me on Twitter.

Keep reading for the full update.

Sincerely,

Increasing Criminal Penalties for Fentanyl Traffickers

An alarming amount of deadly fentanyl has come across our border this year, and now authorities are finding fentanyl that looks like candy. Fentanyl is the number one killer of Americans ages 18-35, and drug traffickers are now targeting people below the age of 18 as well.

As a father to two young children, this highly concerns me. It only takes 2mg of fentanyl to kill a full-grown adult, and one small piece of "candy" containing trace amounts of fentanyl can be fatal to any child. I signed on as an original cosponsor of the Protecting Kids from Candy-Flavored Drugs Act. This bill increases penalties for those who manufacture, distribute, or possess drugs that look like candy or beverages.

Just the News | GOP Rep: Party must focus on security, economic issues, not Dems' obsession with Trump

"With the 2022 midterm elections coming up, many Republican elected officials and party operatives are urging GOP candidates to keep their focus on economic and security issues instead of being sidetracked by Democrats' obsession with former President Donald Trump.

Despite a hostile media's obsessive focus on Trump, voters are concerned with real problems in the country, and Republicans need to acknowledge these issues and campaign on them, argues Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.)."

AJC | Opinion: On IRA law, Georgia Democrats put state’s interests last

"The Inflation 'Reduction' Act is a bad deal for Georgia. While all of Georgia’s federally elected Democrats voted for the bill, Senators Warnock and Ossoff were uniquely positioned to look out for Georgia’s interests, given that the Democratic majority unilaterally wrote the legislation. Unfortunately, Senators Warnock and Ossoff put Georgia last and failed to stand up for our state before the Democrats voted to pass this legislation."
