The first weeks of school are scary enough for kids–and parents. It’s filled with anxiety, and these days the safety of our children is high on that list.
Now, the General Assembly could add guns in the classroom to the list. This Tuesday Senator Mastriano’s bill to arm teachers will receive it’s first vote–we must stop it here. Teachers should focus on educating our kids. Lawmakers should focus on keeping kids safe. And guns in classrooms are a threat to students and teachers. 1
Give students access to guns in the classroom. The vast majority of school shooters are associated with the school so it will only increase the danger;
In moments of chaos if there is an active shooter, it can confuse law enforcement and increase risk;
And remember no training is necessary to carry guns around schools if this becomes law;
I’m like so many parents. We drop off our kids off in the morning at daycare or school, and we hope there isn’t some blaring notification of an active shooter.
My son’s teachers love him, they are there to help him learn and grow. They don’t want to carry a gun because our elected officials continue to refuse to take a stand against gun violence.
