“These stories are out there, and they’re true, whether or not anyone’s telling them.”
— Charlie Wolfson, PublicSource’s local government reporter
& Report for America corps member
Dear false,

We’ll start with the bad news: Decisions are being made every day that affect Allegheny County residents — from how stormwater management affects your home’s landslide risk to whether funding is available to help fix that pothole to how and why police show up on your street – and as many local newsrooms shrink, there aren’t enough reporters to make sure important stories get covered.

Now here’s the good news: Report for America matches gifts from our readers to help reverse this trend — and you’ve probably already read PublicSource stories that exist through this initiative.

Since 2021, PublicSource has been a host newsroom with Report for America ([link removed]) , a national program that pairs local newsrooms with reporters who provide in-depth coverage on under-reported issues and communities. We now host two full-time Report for America corps members who work to expand our reporting on critical stories and issues — Charlie Wolfson (local government) and Quinn Glabicki (environment & climate). Report for America covers part of their salaries and connects them to a national network of other journalists doing this work.

This partnership produces important stories, like Quinn’s story about a Greene County “frack-out” that left residents without usable water ([link removed]) , and Charlie’s investigations into the county’s stalled police review board ([link removed]) and plans to shrink the jail by half or more. ([link removed])

Now we’re asking you to be the final piece in the puzzle and step up to cover the rest of the cost of this reporting. We’ve set a goal of raising $6,000 before Sept. 30. Your gift of $25, $50 or more ([link removed]) helps keep these stories coming and ensures that you’re not in the dark about decisions that affect you and your neighbors.

Sustain our local government and environment coverage with a gift today. ([link removed])
Thanks in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Halle Stockton
