Dear friends,
With the holidays upon us and 2019 drawing to a close, it's a great time to look back at the past year, which has been an important one in the life of the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Since taking up my post as CEO in April, I’m proud to have introduced a new vision for us focussed on what we do best and where we are able to have the most impact – a vision centred on the three pillars of Media Freedom, Inclusive Economies, and Human Rights.
If you have yet to do so, visit our newly relaunched website trust.org to find out more about our work in these areas.
Our new organisational strategy is based on the simple conviction that by leveraging our unique set of skills and combining the power of the media and the law, we can drive systemic change. While this exciting new direction will allow us to work more coherently and unlock our full potential as an organisation, our core services remain unchanged.
Our news team will carry on bringing you daily news coverage and in-depth investigations of slavery and trafficking, the human impact of climate change, LGBT rights, property rights, and social innovation, to name a few. In 2020, we will bring you more stories from the new frontier of human rights: from the impact of technology on people to the practical aspects of economic inclusion.
Our media development team will continue to build the capacity of journalists around the world. Next year, we will prioritise programmes strengthening the role of local media as a tool for democracy and economic development. We will also launch new initiatives to defend media freedom, conduct strategic research, and much more.
Our TrustLaw service will also continue to provide high-quality, free legal assistance from top lawyers to our non-profit members. We will step up our efforts to use the power of legal research to help civil society and human rights organisations advocate for policy reform in their jurisdictions.
I would also like to take a moment to tell you about our revamped annual Trust Conference, which brought together 600 delegates this November for two days of thought-provoking discussions about freedom of the press, tech and human rights and the need to create a fairer economic system. Watch the highlights here and stay tuned for updates on the 2020 agenda.
From all of us here - the very best wishes for a wonderful holiday season, and a healthy and successful year ahead!
Antonio
