Democracy Docket has a comprehensive database tracking nearly 400 democracy-related lawsuits dating back to 2020— from redistricting to election administration and everything in between. In a new report based on this data, our findings reveal a compelling trend — a significant increase in GOP lawsuits in the voting and elections sphere since January of this year:
- In 2021, GOP-affiliated groups and individuals filed only seven lawsuits, accounting for 13% of the total voting cases we tracked in 2021.

In contrast, as of Sept. 16, 2022, GOP-affiliated groups have filed 41 lawsuits this year, accounting for nearly 54% of all voting cases we tracked in 2022.

Over 50% of these 2022 lawsuits attack mail-in voting, while others target election administration. The GOP is also already preparing for the midterms, filing lawsuits in Pennsylvania and North Carolina over how to count election results and which ballots to include.
The 2020 election was considered especially litigious, but our analysis confirms that 2022 is already on track to surpass it. Democracy truly is on the docket. |
