DC Mayor on Migrants Being Sent to Her Sanctuary City: “We're not Texas”

Daily Wire: Washington D.C. Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser complained Friday that the nation’s capital is not equipped for the influx of illegal immigrants being sent by red-state governors fed up with the porous Mexican border. The Democrat mayor spoke days after two buses Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott sent from Del Rio dropped off 100 illegal immigrants in front of Vice President Kamala Harris’s official residence at the Naval Observatory. Abbott and fellow GOP chief executives Ron DeSantis, of Florida, and Doug Ducey, of Arizona, have stepped up their efforts to bring the border crisis to blue states and cities (Daily Wire). Citizen Free Press: DC Mayor Muriel Bowser: “We’re not a border town. We don’t have an infrastructure to handle this type of and level of immigration to our city … We’re not Texas” (Twitter).

Tulsi Gabbard on VP Harris Calling Border Secure: “she's blatantly lying”

Daily Wire: Former Democratic House member Tulsi Gabbard scorched Vice President Kamala Harris for claiming the Mexican border is secure, saying the vice president “has no business being a heartbeat away from the presidency” (Daily Wire). Tulsi Gabbard: Kamala Harris’ statement that “we have a secure border” is further evidence that she’s either completely disconnected from reality or she’s blatantly lying. Either way, she has no business being a heartbeat away from the presidency (Twitter). Washington Examiner: Gabbard tweeted her thoughts in the wake of a report that 199,000 immigrants were met at the border in July alone, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. That makes the total number of crossings since last October at over 1.9 million, which is already more than the 1.7 million who crossed from October 2020 to September 2021 (Washington Examiner).

Governor Newsom Signs Package of Green Energy Bills, Increasing CA’s Dependency on Clean Energy

CBS: Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a sweeping package of bills Friday to expand California’s reliance on clean energy and reduce carbon emissions, moves he said further establish the state as a global climate leader. The new laws include proposals aimed at reducing exposure to gas and oil pollution in communities of color, expanding clean energy jobs and accelerating the state’s timeline for getting most of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Newsom signed them following a record-breaking heat wave that forced California to rely more heavily on natural gas for its electricity production (CBS). Hill: The advancement of the bills constitutes “an essential piece” of the governor’s California Climate Commitment — a $54 billion action plan that aims to create 4 million jobs, according to Newsom’s office (Hill). This comes just after California experienced rolling blackouts due to energy grid strain.

Biden Warns Russia to Avoid Using Nuclear Weapons in Ukraine

Fox News: President Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin against using nuclear weapons in Ukraine in a television interview while declining to say what the consequences would be from the United States if he were to do so…  Biden’s warning comes after Ukraine’s successful counter-offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region that reportedly took Russian troops by surprise causing them to pull back (Fox News). 60 Minutes: “Don’t. Don’t. Don’t. You will change the face of war unlike anything since World War II,” is what President Joe Biden says he would tell President Vladimir Putin if the Russian leader is contemplating the use of tactical nuclear or chemical weapons (Twitter). Axios: The Kremlin last week said that Russia would continue to wage its war in Ukraine until all its military goals have been achieved despite facing a rapidly advancing Ukrainian counter-offensive. In March, a Kremlin spokesperson said that Russia would only use nuclear weapons if there’s a “threat for existence” to the country and not due to the war with Ukraine (Axios).

US Stock Market Fell to Two-Month Low as the Fed Looks to Increase Interest Rates by .75 for a Third Time

Reuters: All three major U.S. stock indexes slid to levels not touched since mid-July, with the S&P 500 closing below 3,900. Staggering past the finish line of a week rattled by inflation concerns, looming interest rate hikes and ominous economic warning signs, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq suffered their worst weekly percentage plunges since June (Reuters). Investors Business Daily: In the wake of Tuesday’s consumer price index, markets reinforced expectations of a third straight Fed rate hike of 75 basis points. Right now, the market is leaning toward yet another 75-basis-point rate hike in November, followed by 25 or 50 basis points in December. That would push the fed funds target rate to either 4%-4.25% or 4.25%-4.5%, vs. expectations of 3.75%-4% before the CPI report (Investors Business Daily).

Daily Mail: Denver is set to provide 140 homeless transgender and non-binary people with $12,000 in no-strings-attached cash to help lift them out of destitution – and combat the squalid encampments and soaring crime rates plaguing the Mile-High City.  The city has allocated $2 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to fund the program, which will be run by the Denver Basic Income Project to mainly get women, transgender and non-binary people housed (Daily Mail). Axios: Overall, 520 people in Denver will get $12,000 for one year as part of the project. 260 people will get $6,500 up front, and $500 a month for 11 months. 260 people will receive $1,000 monthly over the course of a year. 300 people will be part of a control group and get a $50-a-month stipend to determine whether there’s a difference in outcomes (Axios). Matt Connelly: Denver’s using $2 million in taxpayer money to give homeless people a free cell phone along with a year of free cell service. Oh, and $12,000 in taxpayer money to go along with that as well (Twitter).

Turkey Urges US to Rethink Lifting Embargo on Cypress: “it will lead to an arms race on the island”

Fox News: The United States will lift a long-standing arms embargo on Cyprus in a move that has angered NATO ally Turkey. The U.S. embargo on Cyprus remained in place since 1987 as the island remained divided following a Turkish invasion that established a breakaway state. The embargo had forced Cyprus to increasingly turn to Russia for weaponry since it could not buy even defensive weaponry, such as night vision goggles, if they contained any American components (Fox News). Politico: The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Saturday “strongly” condemned the U.S.’s announcement that it will widen the scope of its 2020 decision to lift its arms embargo on Cyprus. The move is “in contradiction to the principle of equality of the two sides on the island,” the ministry said in a statement. The development will “further strengthen the Greek Cypriot side’s intransigence, will negatively affect the efforts to resettle the Cyprus issue; and it will lead to an arms race on the island, harming peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean,” the ministry added. It called on the U.S. to reconsider the decision and “pursue a balanced policy towards the two sides on the island” (Politico).

World Leaders Gather in London for Queen Elizabeth II’s Funeral

Financial Times: Dozens of world leaders and heads of state have begun descending on London to pay their final respects to Queen Elizabeth II, ahead of her funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday. On Sunday, Biden, first lady Dr Jill Biden and US ambassador to the UK, Jane Hartley visited Westminster Hall to pay their respects to the Queen lying in state. Speaking after his visit, the US president said that the world was “better” because of the late monarch’s influence, adding that the Queen reminded him of his own mother. “I think what she (Queen Elizabeth II) gave was a sense of, above all, the notion of service — we all owe something” (Financial Times).
