Criminal law rulings in Canada against SNC-Lavalin for corruption in Libya
Are investigations of Canadian mining companies in Guatemala and Honduras (and around the world) to follow?

As the Hudbay Minerals and Tahoe Resources lawsuits are setting precedents in terms of civil law accountability, these findings of guilt against SNC-Lavalin are hugely important in terms of criminal law accountability.

“With this, Canada can start to say that we’ve got effective enforcement against individuals. […] Executives of Canadian companies will think twice before engaging in this activity because they know now that they can’t hide behind a company.”

Rights Action remains fully committed to the precedent-setting civil lawsuits initiated in 2010 - and on-going - against Hudbay Minerals for mining repression in Guatemala.

Rights Action is also of the opinion that Canadian mining companies – ex: Goldcorp Inc., Hudbay Minerals, Tahoe Resources - not only committed violations of civil law in their operations in Guatemala, but they also acted criminally in various ways.  Rights Action believes that Canadian government officials are aware of this, and that there should be criminal investigations by Canadian authorities into some of their actions.
