New legislation announced on Thursday by Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema would permanently ban new uranium mining claims near Grand Canyon National Park.

The bill would extend a ban put in place by the Obama administration that shut off miners from 1 million acres around the park for 20 years. Sinema's bill supports native tribes that have fought the impact of mining on their drinking water for decades, protects the sensitive hydrogeology of the park, and benefits diverse wildlife in the region.

Similar legislation was passed in the House in October.
