Iowans in D.C.

It is always great to meet with Iowans while they are in Washington! It truly is my favorite part of serving in Congress. Speaking to residents of the Second District allows me to stay informed of what is going on in their communities and what I can do to help.

This week I met with Iowa Farm Bureau to continue our discussion about the upcoming farm bill and what Congress can do to support our farmers.

I also met with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network to discuss the importance of early screening for cancer and how the Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act will allow patients to have access to multi-cancer screening tests.

Congress should be doing everything in its power to support our veterans. That is why I was honored to be recognized by the Wounded Warrior Project for my commitment to those who have been injured as a result of their military service. I also met with the Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars Department to discuss how Congress can better support our veterans.

Iowa is leading the United States in energy exports. That is why it was important to meet with groups such as Growth Energy and NATSO to reaffirm our commitment to renewable energy and lowering fuel costs.

I also want to thank Iowa Legal Aid for stopping by to talk about the services they provide in Iowa.

I finished my week meeting with Iowa Auto Dealers to learn more about catalytic converter anti-theft legislation and how we can better protect Iowans from essential automobile part theft. I also met with my friends from Iowa Pork to talk about the upcoming farm bill and how I remain committed to doing everything I can to protect our farmers and producers.

Floor Speeches

This week, I took time on the floor of the House of Representatives to recognize Ottumwa's Jon Van Utrecht.

Jon entered one of his pumpkins at the Iowa State Fair's Big Pumpkin competition, and his pumpkin came in 6^th place weighing 300 pounds!

Committee Work

This week I had the opportunity to address the Homeland Security Committee regarding the border crisis.

The crisis on our southwest border is not going away, no matter how long this administration chooses to ignore it. President Biden’s policies have made every state a border state.

The Biden Administration has shown us that they are not interested in or capable of securing the U.S.-Mexico border and keeping Americans safe. Every day we are seeing record-high numbers of illegal crossings and our law enforcement officers are overwhelmed.

This administration should be focused on the crisis at our southern border every day and ensuring we are enacting policies to support our Customs and Border Protection Agents and Officers.

I also had the opportunity to speak on President Biden's student loan forgiveness policy during the Education and Labor Committee hearing this week. I addressed the committee about how this policy will put the burden on taxpayers when inflation is at an all time high.

I wrapped up my committee work speaking at the Veterans Affairs Committee about the health of female veterans. As a female veteran, I do everything in my power to ensure that our female veterans receive the best possible care.

Legislative Roundup

This week I introduced an amendment to Representative Val Demings' (FL-10) Health Security and Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Act. This amendment would help prepare the United States for future pandemics and protect front-line workers by making sure they have adequate supplies and personal protective equipment while on the job.

I also cosponsored Representative Diana Harshbarger's (TN-01) Protecting Our Homeland from Chinese Espionage Act. This bill would require companies trying to receive a Department of Homeland Security contract to list any China-affiliated entities. I also joined Representative John Curtis (UT-03) and Representative Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) in cosponsoring a bipartisan resolution, the National Clean Energy Week Resolution. This resolution would designate September 26-30 as National Clean Energy Week.

This week, I voted in support of five bipartisan bills to improve support and care for veterans and their families in the second district. Each of these bills passed in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Additionally, I co-sponsored H.Res. 1030, a resolution to designate Gold Star Families Remembrance Week, a national period to honor the sacrifices made by the families of U.S. military servicemembers who lost their lives in service to the nation.
