John,
Cori just took a critical step to provide employment protection and paid emergency leave to workers impacted by climate disasters through two impactful pieces of legislation.
These bills are necessary to ensure a tragedy like what happened at an Amazon facility just outside of St. Louis when a tornado killed six workers, including two of Cori's constituents, never happens again. As the climate crisis worsens, workers need protection — well beyond what corporations like Amazon are willing to provide on their own.
The first piece of legislation, the Workers Safety In Climate Disasters Act, focuses on ensuring workers have the resources and information they need to make safe decisions during climate disasters. It would:
- Require employers to provide workers paid emergency time off during climate disasters;
- Protect employees from retaliation, interference, or discrimination for using that paid emergency time during severe weather instances; and
- Demand employers to monitor ongoing weather events and keep their employees informed.
Every year we needlessly lose people to the dangers of high winds — often while on the job. Next, Cori introduced the Wind Safety Standard Act which would:
- Establish standards for wind speeds too dangerous for work;
- Allow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to develop federal wind safety guidelines and protocols;
- Require employers to develop and train employees on emergency high wind plans; and
- Institute protections and standards for workers.
Working together we can call on Congress to ensure these bills are passed and sent to President Biden's desk. Please, will you make a $5 donation now to power Cori's legislating and organizing in Congress?
We’ll keep you posted on the progress of this legislation, in the meantime rest assured that as long as Cori’s in Congress — she’ll never stop speaking out on behalf of workers' rights.
Together,
Team Cori
