Welcome to the July edition of the Nottingham Southside newsletter with updates on 2bn worth of major developments over half a square mile of the city, bringing thousands of extra jobs and millions more visitors.

Broadmarsh Car Park development marks major milestone
Broadmarsh car park groundbreaking
Now that demolition and site preparations are now fully complete, construction of the new Broadmarsh Central Library, Car Park and Bus Station reached a significant milestone this week with work starting on the installation of pile foundations. Pictured on the site are members of the City Council and Galliford Try project team with Councillor David Mellen, Leader of Nottingham City Council, Steve Merrin, Operations Director of Galliford Try and David Williams, Deputy Chair of the Local Enterprise Partnership D2N2, who are part funding the project through the Local Growth Fund. Construction reaches its peak at College City Hub

Topping Out ceremony at Nottingham Colleges new City Hub earlier this month marked another significant milestone in the Southside area, with the structural frame of the new building now complete. The number of workers on site will also increase from 80 to 150 in the coming months as construction of the impressive building continues. City Council Leader, Councillor David Mellen, Councillor Neghat Khan, Portfolio Holder for Early Years, Education and Employment and Alison Michalska, Deputy Chief Executive and Corporate Director for Children and Families for Nottingham City Council, met partners to sign off the topping out of the building and take in the views of the changing Nottingham skyline. Gas works to close Canal Street westbound on Monday 29 July

Drivers in Nottingham are being reminded that a 500,000 gas mains upgrade will be starting on Canal Street on Monday 29 July for 14 weeks, during which the road will be closed to westbound traffic between London Road and the Broadmarsh area. Gas network provider Cadent will be replacing half a kilometre of ageing gas mains the size of a small tractor tyre with tough new plastic pipes that will keep gas flowing to the citys homes and businesses until the end of the century. Travel east from the Broadmarsh area to London Road roundabout will remain unaffected by the works, and access to Trent Street and Station Street will be maintained by a right turn from Canal Street eastbound. Keeping Nottingham Moving

With so many changes in this area, keeping traffic moving is a key priority for the city. The City Council have coordinated with other utility providers to take advantage of Canal Street being closed to undertake additional works at the same time avoiding further disruption in the future Coordinating these works are especially important with the planned, longer term changes to the roads around the Broadmarsh area. Progress at intu Broadmarsh

A steady programme of work is underway at intu Broadmarsh. The upper floor is now closed, work continues around Drury Walk to prepare the centre and hoarding is going up around the centre. On the outside, hoardings are up on Collin Street and Middle Hill in preparation for larger scale works and demolition of the new cinema corner, and the faade of the centre is changing already with the removal of the old sails from the Collin Street entrance. The walkway from Collin Street to Lister Gate remains closed from 7pm to 7am every evening and will be in place until the centre is fully redeveloped.

Castle transformation continue

While works around the east side of the Broadmarsh area are well underway, work on a major new chapter in the long history of for Nottingham Castle continues. A new visitor centre, Robin Hood Gallery, Rebellion Gallery and international exhibition space are all taking shape under the scaffolding on Castle Rock, including utilising the caves as part of the visitor attraction. The new galleries will include an immersive experience of Medieval Nottingham and Robin Hood, the Rebellion Gallery, celebrating Nottinghams rebellious spirit and past, along with interactive games and activities throughout the Castle. Steel out of the ground at Unity Square
Unity Square construction
You may have also seen that Unity Square, one of a series of Grade A office developments coming to the Southside area, is beginning to take shape as the steel frame of the site is constructed. The ten-floor block will host HMRC and 4,000 jobs once completed in 2021. Two tower cranes are on site with the frame continuing to be constructed and concrete flooring is due to be installed soon.
