Friend, I would like to share a little bit of my family’s story and why I’m running to be the first Latina to ever represent Oregon in Congress. I hope you’ll take a moment to read it and then chip in to my campaign and help me make history. Thursday marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate the unique contributions and culture of our communities and reflect on just how important they are to the fabric of the United States. As a Latina, I reflect daily on the contributions that the Latino community has made to our country. And I know that millions of people in this country share my story – and my pride. Right now, I want to share the story of my father – a proud Latino man who inspires me every day. Like many who made the harrowing journey before and after, my father immigrated from Mexico to the United States. Upon his arrival, he worked in the fields picking cotton and tomatoes in the Rio Grande Valley, joining millions of other migrants who sustain our country's agriculture industry. Later in life, he joined the military, and after serving two tours in Vietnam, he earned his U.S. citizenship. After that, he spent three decades as a police officer. Our stories are vast and varied, and no two are ever exactly alike. But in hearing each other's stories, we can sense the familiar. My immigrant father was a field worker, soldier, and police officer, but I know that his story resonates with doctors, teachers, and Members of Congress. I believe the best way we can celebrate Hispanic Heritage month is by uplifting these stories and voices from the Latino community. Today, I’m running to be the first Latina to represent Oregon in Congress. I’ll fight to protect our community and the issues we care about. But I need your help to get there. I’m polling neck-and-neck with my opponent, and experts agree it’s going to be a close race.
