John — How would you feel about receiving all your local news directly from a major energy corporation?

An area encompassing Texas and parts of New Mexico is experiencing this right now. Chevron — which has major oil interests in a region known as the Permian Basin — has created its own news outlet purporting to cover the Permian region. The website looks like that of any reputable local news outlet, but the “news” is decidedly less factual. Some of the articles have been lifted verbatim from Chevron press releases.

The point of this website is to convince residents that the Permian Basin is positively impacted by relentless oil extraction and corporate drilling activity — and that such practices are actually good for our environment. We’ve seen other energy corporations try similar disinformation tactics, but there’s something especially sinister about Chevron attempting to pretend its public relations materials are news.

People need local news and rely on it to understand what’s happening in their communities. Chevron has leveraged this basic need and warped it to suit its own profiteering interests. This is a new low, John.

With disinformation this widespread and hiding in plain sight, it’s no wonder that SEEC members face an uphill battle in Congress when trying to enact common-sense measures to combat climate change. Many Americans are operating under assumptions derived from blatant untruths .

Holding these giant companies and their “media outlets” accountable for spreading these untruths is just one more front in the battle to stop climate change. Just this past week, House Democrats held a groundbreaking hearing laying out the lies Big Oil has been spreading in recent years under the guise of supporting the climate.

SEEC members are prepared to take on this fight, but they definitely need your backing, John. Contribute now to SEEC members hard at work to get to the truth, hold energy corporations like Chevron accountable, and fund real climate action. [[link removed]]
