Friend—I wanted to make sure you saw Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s comments after last night’s impeachment vote where she invoked Elijah, calling him our “North Star.”

I thank the Speaker for acknowledging Elijah's efforts. As Former Chair of the Oversight Committee, Elijah fought until his last breath to protect our democracy for future generations. His mission lives on today. I am ready to build upon my husband’s legacy and follow the trail he blazed in Congress.

Earlier this year, my late husband, Congressman Elijah Cummings, posed a question to the country: "When we're dancing with the angels, the question will be asked: In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact?"

After today’s impeachment vote, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues can proudly say that they took a stand for our democracy and upheld their oaths of office to defend the Constitution. I applaud and support their efforts.

The President broke the law. He engaged in a pattern of behavior that encouraged foreign powers to interfere in our electoral process. This undermines faith in our elections, the political will of U.S. voters, and our Constitution.

I will be as fierce a defender of democracy as my husband was in Congress, and it would be an honor to build upon his legacy. I hope you’ll show your support by making a contribution to my campaign today.
