where wellbeing meets politics

Maxine Waters Told You So

While none of this is "merry" or "happy", it is important. Reverend Jacqui Lewis says that "justice removes whatever is in the way of love"...and right now that obstacle sits in the highest seat in the land.

Impeachment is the democratic tool we have to remove a dangerous and unchecked President. Just as our ancestors united to defeat kings, the Confederacy, fascism, and Jim Crow, we will unite to defeat the Trump Administration (By The People).

Trump's impeachment is a reminder that fear and hate cannot win. That love and justice IS the will of the people and we will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all.

This is not a game. We don't impeach for political leverage or gain...

We impeach for the thousands of kids who are still in cages and families separated at the border.
We impeach for our indigenous communities who are being erased by white supremacist policies.
We impeach for our black and brown folks who live in fear of police brutality and "law and order".
We impeach for our LGBTQ brothers, sisters and everyone in between who are being denied healthcare and workplace protections.
We impeach for reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.
We impeach for mother earth.

And we impeach for all of us. May we continue to fight for justice and build the more inclusive and compassionate country that has never been.

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN
While Republicans insist that Trump represents the people's vote (ummm, Hillary won the popular vote), it seems like the people have, in fact, spoken. For the third time ever in American history, a sitting president has been impeached by the House of Representatives and this particular president, was impeached with more votes against him than any other American president - it's like he finally won the popular vote. But it also mattered because it was a day when the constitution was invoked as it was intended - to prevent corruption and defend democracy. Failure to respond to Trump's abuses basically renders the constitution meaningless. And make no mistake, black women led the way to Trump's impeachment (more on that below) and the people followed thanks to early organizing by By The People and Free Speech for the People. More on what's next below.
WHAT'S NEXT
As the impeachment inquiry moves into a new stage, here's what you can expect from what's next.
1. House picks impeachment managers who will act as prosecutors in the Senate trial.
2. House will submit articles of impeachment to the Senate. With Moscow Mitch having publicly committed to "total coordination" in the White House, it puts Senate's ability to maintain their oath in question. But don't write things off just yet (Thanks, Pat). It's actually Justice John Roberts, not the majority leader, who will be making the key decisions (sorry, Mitch). But the House has another card - to withhold sending any articles to the Senate unless and until a majority of senators commit to holding an open and fair trial in accordance with the Constitution.
3. Once articles are submitted (this is where WE come in), then it's all hands on deck to Swarm the Senate and demand Trump's removal. Congress works for us and We the People (the majority in fact) and it's up to us to hold them accountable to our will. See you there.
IMPEACH WHITE SUPREMACY
While we may have won one battle this week, our work is just beginning. This isn't about impeaching one white supremacist, this is about impeaching white supremacy itself. And we must be relentless in our commitment to disrupting and dismantling white supremacy where ever it lives. And that starts with "Me and White Supremacy". A LOVE LETTER TO MAXINE
Representative Maxine Waters told you so. She has been demanding the impeachment of Trump since December of 2016 - before it was popular or possible. Waters gave a rousing speech on the House floor, invoking Maya Angelou when she said "when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time". Make no mistake, Auntie Maxine and black women led the way to Trump's impeachment. But don't just thank them, follow them. Check out She The People's 20 for 2020
