** News of the world environment
------------------------------------------------------------
Hi there,
friend,

As many of you know by now, the Journal has a new associate editor, Brian Calvert. We are so excited to have him join our team and are looking forward to learning from each other and working together to produce more powerful stories and features about our living world.

Without the support of our generous readers, we wouldn’t have been able to start this new chapter. Donations to the Green Journalism Fund power our small team of independent journalists. Will you support the Journal and make a donation today?

The quest for ever-growing profits distorts how so much of the media works these days. Big corporate media giants — or billionaire “benefactors” — acquire smaller newsrooms and start cutting staff to extract higher profits.

These profit-driven moves slash coverage to the bone — especially environmental reporting. This leaves valuable information available to fewer and fewer people. Northwestern University projects the US will lose one-third of its newspapers by 2025.

Some talented journalists venture out on their own, launching paid newsletters or podcasts. But without sustainable support, people burn out. Hard. Reporting, writing, and editing isn’t a one-person job. Eventually, something has to give. Mental health stress. Financial stability. Career goals. It’s easy to decide that it’s just not worth it. When that happens, the corporate grip on the media landscape tightens. And our democracy weakens further.

Earth Island Journal is a nonprofit publication. We aren’t owned by a billionaire nor a big corporation. We aren't beholden to advertisers. But we do have a passionate base of donors that allows us to go beyond what the mainstream media offers.

So far this year, Earth Island Journal has published:
* More than 150 stories on our website.
* Four print magazines — the latest a special extended issue on urban environments that explores whether we can design cities to be more resilient and equitable.
* Eighteen editions of our twice-monthly newsletter.

That’s a lot for a small team like ours! In addition to our three-editor staff, Earth Island Journal works with freelance reporters, photographers, and artists to produce its online and print editions.

Our wide network of both seasoned and new journalists from across the world allows us to tell compelling and distinctive stories rarely featured in corporate publications.

Our passionate base of Green Journalism Fund donors help support these working journalists and artists. You can amplify our impact with a donation today:
