Dear John,
WOLA's Human Rights Awards Ceremony and Benefit Gala 2022, on September 21, is less than a week away, and I would like to take a moment to tell you more about the bravery of some of the people we will be honoring on that special evening.
This week, you can learn more about the incredible work of Salvadoran lawyer David Morales, who for years has led the fight for truth and justice for the victims of the El Mozote massacre. Also, check out this interview with WOLA Senior Fellow, Dr. Jo-Marie Burt, about the bravery of the Maya Achí and Q’eqchi’ women of Guatemala who have led the fight to bring to justice the paramilitary and military officials responsible for their sexual violence during the internal armed conflict in the early 1980s.
Also, below you will find more details about some fascinating events we are hosting with partner organizations this week on the state of justice in El Salvador and Guatemala and the impact of militarization in Mexico. You can find all that, and much more, in this WOLA Weekly. Best, |

"Zerón is a central figure in the construction of the false ‘historical truth’ version of the Ayotzinapa case—the version that federal authorities manufactured under torture and that has now been discredited. The importance of his return to Mexico to be held accountable, and potentially to provide useful information, shouldn’t be underestimated.”
