CfA's September 16, 2022 Newsletter
Thank you for your continued support of Campaign for Accountability. We're dedicated to continue working to hold the powerful accountable.
This week:
- Facebook Creates Pages for Terrorists and Extremists: On Wednesday, during a Senate hearing on "Social Media’s Impact on Homeland Security," Sen. Gary Peters confronted Meta's Chief Product Officer Chris Cox with findings from a recent Tech Transparency Project (TTP) report that showed how Facebook is auto-generating pages for white supremacist groups. Cox could not offer an immediate explanation, and Peters asked him to follow up with "written comments."
- Watch the exchange here.
- Today, we published a short piece taking a closer look at Facebook's auto-generation problem, and its executives' long history of dodging legislator questions when confronted with the reality of this dangerous platform "feature."
- Facebook Marketplace, WhatsApp Storefronts, and TikTok Videos -- How Coyotes Get Creative: On Thursday, TTP released a report detailing how “coyotes”— who smuggle undocumented migrants across the U.S. border—are using social media in creative ways to advertise their services and communicate with migrants. TTP’s review found that coyotes—or scammers posing as coyotes—take advantage of a host of free online tools offered by Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok to reach migrants desperate to make the journey north.
- TTP found ads in Facebook Marketplace listings purporting to offer coyote services—clearly demonstrating that Meta is profiting off of its failure to enforce its own policies on human smuggling.
- Yet, when BuzzFeed News asked Facebook about this clear monetization, a company spokesperson dodged the question, saying they "couldn’t immediately comment on whether the ad examples in the TTP report or others provided by BuzzFeed News generated revenue."
