FIVE LGBTQ Stories You Should Know About

1. Big Wins in Delaware, New Hampshire and Rhode Island

All Victory Fund-endorsed candidates in Delaware and New Hampshire won their primaries earlier this week, as well as almost half of our candidates in Rhode Island! This is Victory Fund’s last primary of the year – we’re now fully focused on the November general election.

Rhode Island state Senators Tiara Mack and Sam Bell handily defeated their challengers and are on-track to serve another term in the legislature. Spotlight candidate Brett Smiley won his primary for mayor of Providence after winning over 42% of the vote! Deputy Political Director Cesar Toledo joined Brett for GOTV.



In Delaware, incumbents Marie Pinkney and Eric Morrison defended their seats and will continue to serve in the state Senate and state House. In New Hampshire, Gerri Cannon and Rebecca Perkins Kwoka were unopposed and should sail to another term in the legislature this November.

2. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Latinx leaders have impacted our movement in immeasurable ways. Check out our amazing LGBTQ Latinx candidates who are on the frontlines of fighting for and defending our freedoms, such as Spotlight candidate Celia Israel. Israel is running for mayor of Austin, TX and would be the first Latina mayor of a top U.S. city.

3. Abortion is on the Ballot

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: abortion is an LGBTQ issue. This week, West Virginia became the second state to pass a near-total abortion ban (meet the LGBTQ candidates running in West Virginia here) after Roe was overturned. This bill comes a day after anti-LGBTQ U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham proposed a dangerous Senate bill to ban abortion after 15 weeks nationwide.

Game Changer candidate Becca Balint, who is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Vermont quickly spoke up against the proposed ban. “This is a cruel attack on our fundamental rights. We cannot watch from the sidelines.”

4. Election Fraudsters are on the Ballot, Seeking Votes

This November, 60 percent of Americans will have an election denier (candidates who spread fraudulent tales about the 2020 election or believe the election was stolen from Trump) on their ballot. Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy - and many of our candidates are fighting back against the lies and working to defend the integrity of our elections.

Game Changer candidate Kris Mayes, who is running for attorney general in Arizona, is running against Trump-endorsed candidate Abraham Hamadeh, who has made The Big Lie a platform of his campaign.

In California, Game Changer candidate Will Rollins, a former federal prosecutor, is facing off against U.S. Congressman Kevin Calvert, who voted against certifying the 2020 election results.

In the race for Maryland’s first Congressional District, Game Changer candidate Heather Mizeur is challenging U.S. Congressman Andy Harris, a known election denier who met with Donald Trump in December, allegedly working to try and overturn the 2020 election.

And in Massachusetts, Game Changer candidate Maura Healey is leading in the polls against Trump-backed, election denier Geoff Diehl.

5. Leslie Herod Running for Mayor

Colorado state Representative Leslie Herod made history when she because the first Black out LGBTQ person ever elected to the state legislature. Now, she’s running for Mayor of Denver! Herod has passed over 150 bills driving criminal justice reform and civil rights during her time in the state House. We’ll be watching this race closely.
