Blog: (Dis)respect for Marriage Act Could Gut Religious Freedom
|
By Luke Mueller
In a recent op-ed for The Washington Post, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) advocated for the so-called Respect for Marriage Act (RMA), a bill that would cement same-sex marriage in federal law. RMA has already passed the House with bipartisan support and could receive its final vote in the Senate as soon as Monday. Despite the high-sounding language of “respect,” in fact this bill would threaten the religious freedom of millions across the country.
Today’s RMA legislation is a response to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s comments on whether the landmark Obergefell case would be overturned in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson. While that remains very unlikely, those who support same-sex marriage are worried - worried enough to take reckless actions that could irreversibly harm religious freedom.

LEAD: Why Christians are Called to Engage
|
By Patience Griswold, LEAD Program Director
Proverbs tells us that when the righteous prosper, the city rejoices. Amy Sherman pointed out in her book, Kingdom Calling that this points to a very unique way in which the righteous approach their own success — rather than using power, influence, or success for their own self-gain, the righteous approach their success in a way that blesses the entire community.
Similarly, in Jeremiah, the exiled Israelites are told to seek the welfare of the city. This principle has implications that extend far beyond just political engagement, but it certainly applies to the way that we approach civic life. We should engage with our communities and our nation in a way that blesses the people around us. That includes working to elect people who lead with wisdom, pursuing policies that show true justice and help our communities thrive, and speaking out against policies that are unjust or harmful.

Blog: Minnesota MOMS Seek to Defend Parental Rights Among Other State Laws
|
By Renee Carlson, General Counsel, True North Legal
Pictured above, Renee Carlson, General Counsel of True North Legal, emcees a press conference on behalf of MOMS, Mothers Offering Maternal Support, where a group of over 50 MOMS is seeking to intervene in a significant case about abortion in Minnesota.
Constitutional expert and lawyer, Teresa Collett is serving as lead counsel in this case. Just this past summer, Ramsey County District Court Judge Thomas Gilligan, struck down nearly all abortion regulations, even laws that included bi-partisan legislative support. As it stands, this decision makes Minnesota one of the most radical abortion states in the entire coutry.

(Dis)respect for Marriage Act Vote Postponed
|
Friends,
I want to thank you for making your voice heard on the misleadingly-named Respect for Marriage Act. The bill would have codified same-sex “marriage” into federal law and sought to strip away religious freedom protections, making ministries and non-profits that believe marriage is exclusively between a man and a woman, as God designed it, subject to lawsuits and federal penalties. Thankfully, this bill has been postponed until after the November election.
If supporters of God’s design for marriage continue to succeed, there will never be a vote on this bill. This is just one example that goes to show how your voice matters. I am grateful to partner with you and look forward to continue to diligently advocate for God's design for marriage, while defending life, family, and religious freedom in our great state.
