Friend —
I’ve had a couple of days to reflect on our trip to West Virginia earlier this week. It’s amazing to see the extraordinary work being done by organizers in the Mountain State. From our climate future to faith organizing to Black voter engagement, meeting the people who power these projects is so inspiring. I wish I could take each and every one of you with me to see the impact they’re making. You can check out more from our trip on our Instagram page in our West Virginia stories.
One of the experiences that really stuck with me was meeting with climate organizers just outside of Charleston who took us around the “sacrifice zone” their community has become. Sacrifice zones are areas with concentrated, polluting industrial activity, exposing residents to cancer-causing chemicals on a daily basis. In West Virginia and across the country, these are largely Black and low-income communities. The organizers we met with are dedicating their lives to holding polluters accountable, securing better protections from their government, and building a healthier future for their families.
It’s the kind of high-stakes organizing we see across Groundwork’s focus states.
Did you know that we gave out our first Groundwork grants close to a year ago? That fact hit me as we were on the road to meet with our WV grantees. With the stakes I mentioned above, I came home from WV with an even firmer commitment and motivation to do all we can to expand our reach with this critical program. The Groundwork team and I are currently reviewing and accepting applications for our next round of grants. Are you with us? Donate now so we can support even more grants.
The money we raise goes to our partner organizations in states traditionally overlooked by the political establishment. These organizations are putting in the work all year round – not just during election season – building the networks needed to exercise political power. You can make a difference for these partners by giving to Groundwork now.
Thank you for being a critical member of this team.
