Team,
With Election Day somehow only a few short weeks away, I wanted to give you a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at a critical part of our campaign: Michigan State University.
This is the first election where these MSU students will be on campus and able to register to vote at their campus addresses – which means we’re currently in an all-out push to talk to as many students as we can, register them to vote, answer any questions they might have, and provide whatever resources they need.
A key piece of this is that we don’t just want to be talking at the students – we want them involved. Which is why we’ve hired part-time student organizers. We’ve even been hosting “dorm storms” where our organizers hand out information to students in their dorms.
And because I’m a numbers nerd… let me break down the math for you. Each of our organizers make $22 an hour. We ask them to bring 3 friends who are student canvassers and make $18 an hour. Each shift typically lasts 2 hours. All together, each shift costs us about $150.
The strategy here is a bit different than the rest of the new district for a few reasons, namely – students just don’t watch traditional TV in the same way their parents do, therefore they’re much less likely to see any of my television ads. Which is why we’re taking this more effective (not to mention MUCH cheaper) approach.
If you would like to help out, consider a contribution of $18 to fund a student canvasser, $22 to fund a student organizer, or (if you’re feeling especially generous) $150 to fund an entire shift. I, and some very eager college students, would be grateful!
