Taylor Swift is Actually Donating Her Private Jet To Pay For the IRA

Okay, we lied. However! New polling ([link removed]) from Data for Progress finds that voters support key provisions that will pay for the Inflation Reduction Act. 68 percent of voters support raising the corporate tax rate to 15 percent for corporations making over $1 billion annually (so not Taylor). 59 percent of voters are in favor of funding the IRS, which will help enforce tax laws on multimillionaires, billionaires, and large corporations. We also find that 56 percent of voters support creating a 1 percent tax on corporations that buy back their own stock.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

WEED LOVE FOR IT TO STAY

In November 2020, the state of Oregon passed Measure 110, which decriminalized the possession of small amounts of drugs and diverted millions of dollars of marijuana taxes to addiction services, by a+17-point margin ([link removed]) .

A new survey ([link removed]) from Data for Progress shows that the law has retained much of that initial support, with 58 percent saying it should remain in place and only 36 percent saying the measure should be repealed.

Barb Against Abortion Bans

This week, Representative Barbara Lee joins the Data for Progress blog to underscore the importance of safe and legal abortion access and talk about the federal governement’s role in protecting the right to choose.

New polling ([link removed]) from DFP shows that voters support the federal government providing funding to states that are now providing abortions to both in-state and out-of-state residents by a +9-point margin, including Democrats by a +68-point margin and Independents by a +6-point margin.

Dems Deliver

This week’s Dems Deliver is a plea on behalf of Hawaii residents: please respect the island or go somewhere else! Literally, anywhere. Have you been to Spain? Or Iceland? We hear New Jersey is nice, occasionally. Hawaii is an incredible place, we get it, but it’s also part of America’s long and gross history of mistreating Indigenous people and destroying the natural environment.

Thankfully, tourists are finally starting to leave after record breaking visitors in July ([link removed]) , and TikTok couples have moved back to the mainland ([link removed]) after making living in Hawaii part of their personality. (Please tell us that you also follow Matt and Abby and it’s not just us wasting hours of our day.)

However, that’s not all Hawaiins can get excited about. Hawaii will receive $8,218,000 in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to repair and improve harbors on Oahu, Molokai, and Maui. It will also be used for dredging and surveying. $3,365,00 will go towards the Kaunakakai Harbor, $3,270,000 toward Kahului Harbor, and $1,583,000 toward the Haleiwa Small Board Harbor. You can learn more about the project here ([link removed]) .

While we can’t necessarily give the Democrats credit for the end of the travel season, we can give them a big round of applause for improving harbors. Now, let’s please work on that extremely high cost of living and make sure climate change doesn’t destroy the island. And just a quick PSA: maybe luaus shouldn’t be the theme of your next frat party, just a thought.
