#LowcountryFirst Pass In Review |September 16, 2022 Taking Care of our Veterans Good afternoon and happy Friday, It has been a busy week in Washington, and with only 2 weeks left of session, we have plenty more to do. On Tuesday, we joined the Wounded Warrior Project’s Women Warriors Summit. These brave heroes shared their stories about VA healthcare and the challenges they have faced. Later in the day, we met with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and voted on the first bills of the week. On Wednesday, Moms for America honored our office with an A rating and a spot on their Mom’s list. We have always, and will continue to work for our mothers across America. After a meeting with the SC Veterans of Foreign Wars, it was time to vote! During this vote series, two bills our office worked on were passed out of the House of Representatives. These bills focused on helping our veterans. The Faster Payments to Veterans Survivors’ Act will help improve the VA’s management of undispersed life insurance funds. Our brave servicemembers put their lives on the line for our country. We must ensure the family members and spouses of the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice are quickly provided the funds and services they need to avoid financial uncertainty. The second bill, the Student Veterans Emergency Relief Act will help ensure veterans’ GI benefits don’t lapse. On Thursday, our office met with the Veterans Action Council on Cannabis Access to learn more about how cannabis helps our veterans who struggle with PTSD and other health issues. Later in the afternoon, we went back to vote and another one of our bills passed the house. This marks three bills in one week! The Whistleblower Protection Improvement Act helps protect the brave individuals who expose waste, fraud, and abuse by our government. Whistleblowers serve an important role in keeping our government honest. And in the words of the National Taxpayers Union, this bill is a ‘no-brainer.’ Our office is still in search of interns for the fall. If you are interested in joining our team in Charleston, Beaufort or Washington please fill out an application here.
