Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Every September and October, Hispanic Heritage Month offers us a moment to reflect on the contributions that Hispanic and Latino people make to our country.

And as a proud Latina woman, I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate, honor, and uplift the Hispanic and Latino community.

One of my favorite parts of Hispanic Heritage Month is listening to the millions of stories – each unique and different – told by people within our community. For me, my family immigrated to this country in search of freedom. We fled an unstable Colombia when my father was kidnapped by a Marxist terrorist group, and started a new life here in the United States when I was seventeen years old. And a few decades later, I went on to become the first Latina Democrat ever elected to the Florida State Senate.

But, John, my story is one of millions.

Every day, I feel immense pride for my family, my story, and my heritage. So today and every day, I hope you’ll join me in uplifting the voices and stories of those within the Hispanic and Latino community. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
