A chance to remember Queen Elizabeth in Nottingham this Sunday

Queen BAlcony

The City Council has organised a ?Remembering Her Majesty? event to take place in the Old Market Square on Sunday (September 18) from 7pm, incorporating the national Moment of Reflection.

We felt that it was appropriate to give Nottingham residents the opportunity to come together and remember Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ahead of her funeral on Monday. She will always have a special place in the hearts of a great many local people and we hope this will provide a fitting tribute and chance to reflect on her devotion, dedication and dignity in serving the British people.

It will be a multi-faith event involving contributions from the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Rt Rev Paul Williams, local Muslim leader Dr Musharraf Hussain, the Catholic Bishop of Nottingham, the Rt Rev Patrick McKinney and Senior Pastor at God's Vineyard, Dr Ezekiel Alawale. Other contributors include councillors, members of the local community and the City Council?s Chief Executive.

?Remembering Her Majesty? will start at 7pm with music from the Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass Band and will conclude with a minute?s silence being observed for the national Moment of Reflection at 8pm.

Remembering Queen Elizabeth's visits to Nottingham

QEII in Nottingham

Images of The Queen?s visits to Nottingham will be shown at the ?Remembering Her Majesty? event and remind us of those happy occasions and the extent to which she is held in affection here in the city.

Queen Elizabeth first visited in her Coronation year, 1953, as well as for three Jubilees - Silver in 1977, Gold in 2002 and Diamond in 2012, her last visit to Nottingham. In total she visited at least ten times, including to open The Queen?s Medical Centre and the University of Nottingham?s Jubilee campus, visiting famous Nottingham industries of bicycle and lace manufacturing, meeting local cricket and skating legends, Derek Randal and Torvill and Dean, and inspecting local military regiments.

You can take a look at these and other occasions when The Queen came to Nottingham, along with accompanying images, here [ [link removed] ].

The Book of Condolence remains open and flowers can still be laid at the Council House. In line with the rest of the country, Books of Condolence in Nottingham ? at Loxley House and Dales, Clifton and Bulwell Riverside libraries, as well as the Council House ? will remain open to sign until 5pm on Tuesday (20 September). Council buildings will be closed for the bank holiday, but people can pay a tribute online here [ [link removed] ]. They will reopen at 9am on Tuesday.
