Hi John,
I'm Amanda Farías, New York City Council Member up for re-election in District 18, lifelong Bronxite, and second-generation Afro-Latina of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. I’m also a proud Run for Something alum.
What I love most about where I'm from is the way we show up for each other. Whether it's the community organization providing meals, or the high school teacher volunteering their time to help students find their career paths, we are powerful because of the people who create and shape this community.
While we are a vibrant and resilient community, years of failed leadership, cuts in social services, relentless over-policing of black and brown neighborhoods, and the worst housing crisis in a generation have left Bronxites with few opportunities to thrive.
Our communities deserve to be led by someone who is connected to the struggle, someone who has lived our experience and knows our worth.
That's exactly the type of candidate Run for Something aims to support and elect. This Hispanic Heritage Month, chip in

When I first chose to run for New York City Council District 18, I was the youngest person to have ever run and the only woman in a five-way race. And, despite being about 29% of the population in New York City, Latina, Latino, and Latinx candidates are still severely underrepresented in the highest levels of government in the city.
While it wasn't easy, with Run for Something and my community in my corner, I fought and won my race for New York City Council District 18 in 2021. As a City Council Member, I am now able to secure resources, services, and policies that serve the interests of the Bronx and my community at large.
As a former organizer for Barack Obama's 2012 campaign, the phrase "we're the ones we've been waiting for" rings as true now as it did then. If we're going to make a transformational change and address our community's needs, we must ourselves be the ones in power.

I couldn't do any of this without my community and the partnership with Run for Something. Thank you for your support.
