The Minnesota Department of Affairs (MDVA) mission is to serve Minnesota Veterans, their dependents and survivors by connecting them with the federal and state care and benefits they have earned. For me, this has been one of the most honorable missions I have supported in my 30 plus years of State service. I have had the opportunity to work at three other State agencies in my career, all with worthy missions to make Minnesota a better place to live. However, MDVA is where I found a sense of belonging, knowing I?m part of a team that serves Minnesota Veterans and their families.
My father served in the Army as a Medic in the Korean War and I had other family members who had served in past wars. When I decided to join the Navy back in 1980, my family was very proud of me to carry on our family?s service to our country. I spent a total of 21 years (five active and 16 reserve) in the Navy as a Logistics Specialist and it was another rewarding life experience that I wouldn?t change. One of my sons also joined the Army and trained to be a Medic and is currently in his 14th year of service at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I?m happy to see the family tradition to serve our country continue.
When the opportunity to work at MDVA presented itself eight years ago, it seemed to be another call of duty that I couldn?t pass up. Like most Minnesotans, I had no idea what the department was responsible for, but I quickly learned all that MDVA offers to our Veterans to help them receive the benefits they deserve for the sacrifices that they and their families have made for our country.
MDVA has seen tremendous growth over the last five years, and we are in great need of new staff to come on board to help in our mission. Construction is underway for a new Veterans Cemetery in Redwood Falls and three new Veterans Homes in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston; all are scheduled to open in mid- 2023. In addition, the department has received an increase in funds to help end Veteran Homelessness and to help reduce Veteran suicides in the state. There is much to do to help our Veterans and their families in Minnesota. I encourage you to consider this call to duty and come work for MDVA. Like me, I?m sure you will find it to be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
